How we work with clients looking to employ legal staff
Taking on a new employee is expensive, your costs may involve a new computer, laptop, desk, phone, drafting an employment contract, company car and a recruitment fee, and that’s in addition to ensuring that the new person does not rock the boat for your existing team. Commercially you have to get it right.
What happens when you register a job
To register a legal job, call 01279 464455 and speak to one of our legal recruitment team, Kingsley, Pip or James and email the job description to firstname.lastname@example.org or via register the job via our website.
We will want to discuss the job with you. This helps us understand your requirements in more detail i.e. the skills, qualifications, solicitor or legal executive, type of work, client interaction, volume of work, case management system or secretarial support, size of company, benefits including pay, holiday, pension, life assurance, private health care, parking, flexible working hours etc. We will also want to know your reason for the vacancy and understand more about office environment and get a feel for the people fit.
It is always advantageous to meet our clients, this also significantly speeds up the process and improves the placement success ratio. If you would like a coffee and a chat we will always put time aside.
The recruitment process
Your job is registered on our automated recruitment database called Profile.
We conduct an automated search of our active candidates and shortlist suitable individuals. We also network with industry contacts and dormant candidates as these are a great source for recommendations. The BWF Legal team are experts and have premium LinkedIn accounts, so we will also invest time in our social media platform.
We then contact the best suited candidates and discuss the role. We can work on a confidential anonymous basis if our clients prefer. Our candidates have been interviewed during the registration stage, and we will disclose to you if we have met the candidate, conducted a Skype interview or a competency based telephone interview.
CV’s are updated and sent to you. Some clients want just 3 CV’s, others want a larger selection of up to 10. We provide current salary information, notice periods and reasons for leaving as well as checking the status of qualifications with the Law Society, the Chartered Institute for Legal Executives or the Council of Licensed Conveyancers (CLC).
We ask you to provide CV feedback, we need to know if we are not hitting the brief, so we can adjust our search.
We set up interviews between both parties and ensure the candidate has all the information they need i.e. a copy of the job description if one is available, details of whom they are meeting, if parking is available and the time of the interview. Confirmation of the interview is sent to both parties.
We ask the candidate to call us after the interview, we obtain their feedback and will call you to discuss your thoughts.
When the interview process moves to offer stage, we are instrumental in helping both parties reach agreement on the offer of employment. We need a lot of information from you, to ensure that the candidate understands the benefits package and appreciates the opportunity so that we can present this professionally and the candidate is satisfied to accept. Remember our Consultants are fully trained to REC standards to present offers on behalf of our clients, we have a very structured approach to ensure we get this crucial stage of the negotiations right first time.
We then help the candidate through the resignation process, keeping you informed at all times. If a notice period is long, we will suggest keeping in touch and maybe meeting up for the odd coffee to ensure there are no last minute issues.
After Care – our service will continue after the individual commences employment with you because 16% of people joining a new company leave in the first few months. Our Consultants will have built an honest and trusting relationship with the candidate, and we will call them to check how they are settling into their new role. If there are any teething problems we will let you know.
Advertising your job
Once we register a job we draft an anonymous advert to appear on our website and on specialist legal jobs boards that we use. This will help to attract industry professionals to apply. You will have the opportunity to consider adverts in the industry press with your company logo and also expand the coverage of your vacancy through social media channels that we use. Your Consultant is fully trained in all areas of advertising and will discuss this with you when we register the position. Hyperlink to Advert page.
Because we work across the UK, we are familiar in working in locations that sometimes seem impossible because they are remote. The legal profession do tend to like to work close to home, but we have found that solicitors will relocate for the right position or if their circumstances change. We do have a number of candidates who would consider this option. We also find many locums are happy to work away from home and will book accommodation close to the client’s offices.
